In 2024 Amy Churchill is running for re-election to the Buncombe County Board of Education, where she currently serves as Vice-Chair.
She has been endorsed for re-election by a committee of public education organizations including: Buncombe County Association of Educators, Asheville City Association of Educators, and NC Retired School Personnel. She has also been endorsed by "Public School Strong," a statewide organization focused on making sure all children in North Carolina have access to honest, accurate, safe, and fully funded public education.
About her campaign Amy says, "I am running for re-election to the Buncombe County Board of Education because it has been a real privilege and a true pleasure to support the educational goals of Buncombe County Schools, students, teachers and staff in innovative, forward-thinking ways such as the enhancement of STEM Initiatives, expansion of career technical education programs, and maintaining a robust ARTS program throughout our schools.
"It is my desire to continue to serve students and their families, educators, and staff, and the community at large in the most supportive, collaborative, and effective manner possible."
Amy values community involvement and will continue to listen to concerns, seek answers to questions, and encourage parents, students, and community members to participate in opportunities to learn about and engage with schools on multiple levels. (Volunteers are always welcome!)
Innovation has been, and continues to be, a passion of Amy's and of Buncombe County Schools. For examples of some of the most successful innovation strategies so far, check out the examples on the Together We Rise page.
Amy advocates for transparency and accountability in the education system, ensuring resources are allocated efficiently and effectively.
One of the things that bothers her the most about NC's "Opportunity Scholarships" is the lack of transparency when it comes to private schools, both how they use public tax dollars, and what if any success they are achieving with their students.
Since 2012 when she was first elected to the BCS Board of Education, Amy Churchill has been dedicated to fostering excellence in education and advocating for positive change.
She has supported pay increases for educators and staff at the local and state level, and has reached out to state legislators to express concerns about using public school funds for private school vouchers.
Amy is the parent of a student who attended BCS schools from kindergarten through high school, and who went on to graduate with honors from NC State. As such, she has been closely involved with our schools as a parent as well as a school board member. This gives her a unique understanding of students and families in the school system, including their needs and desires.
She knows that an effective board member must put the needs of ALL children in the system first, along with the needs of the educators and staff who serve them.
From 2021-2022 Amy served as President of the NC School Board Association, and continues to sit on their Board. She is currently the Vice-Chair of the Buncombe County Board of Education.
